Natalie is a brilliant artist w/an amazing voice.
The Haunt performed a show at the Japanese American Center in LA in May, and my partner and I loved it, prompting us to purchase tickets for her Orpheum show. As literary individuals (I have a degree in English Lit, while my partner has a journalism degree) and music enthusiasts, we admire her new venture into poetry centered on children.
I admire her dedication to pursuing her passions. The poetry delves into adult themes such as death, love, and sex, and her musical elements enhance its beauty. She skillfully blends various musical styles to complement each poem, which her band executes impeccably.
The Haunt's voice remains robust and commanding after more than 20 years in the industry, impressing me with her talent. Additionally, she adds humor to her performance, sharing amusing anecdotes about poets and mimicking Katharine Hepburn while reading Edward Lear.
The Orpheum proved to be the ideal setting for The Haunt and her band, a talented group of 6-8 seasoned musicians. They filled the venue with rich sounds, and the acoustics were superb. Despite concerns about audience engagement, the attendees in Los Angeles were warm, attentive, and appreciative.
It was a poignant moment when The Haunt performed two songs about LA during her encores, concluding with "Kind and Generous." These words aptly describe both Merchant and her band, who delivered a three-hour show filled with beautiful music, laughter, and positive energy.
